AB & J Sandwich: A Classic Remix

Peanut Butter and jelly sandwiches have been passed down from generation to generation and over the years, these delicious sandwiches have evolved. I’ve definitely had my share, and I never get tired of them! In fact, I look for ways to put a spin on this traditional snack. After learning that there are other nuts and spreads that are healthier and tasty to eat, I gave this classic sandwich a makeover!

Instead of using regular peanut butter, I used an all natural almond butter or hazelnut butter because both are high in monounsaturated fat (the good fat), unlike peanut butter. Also, I switched to an all natural blueberry spread instead of the grape jelly; blueberries are high in antioxidants and are considered a super food! One more thing to shake up this classic sandwich, I added one tablespoon of ground flax seeds to add protein, fiber, and Omega 3 fatty acid. Not only is this a healthy remix, it’s also a delicious treat for the kiddies!

1 tablespoon almond butter

1 tablespoon ground flaxseeds

1 tablespoon blueberry spread

2 slices whole grain bread

Mix the almond butter and the ground flaxseeds with a fork. Spread the almond butter mixture onto one slice of the bread and the blueberry spread onto the other slice. Press both slices together.

  1. Susan Chiaramonte says:

Hmmm…delicious. I also sprinkle ground flaxseed on kale salad which is delicious.

  2. Jess says:

I love this idea! Nugget is going through a total growth spurt right now and eats three PB&J sandwiches before lunch time every day. I’d love to mix it up with the same general concept to expand his tastes. Plus I’m a sucker for anything almond so Mommy may be sneaking a sammich or two for herself. :)

  3. Kelly says:

I’ve never tried flax seed! How exciting! I’m totally going to try it on other things like Susan did on a salad! I totally agree with Jess too… I love almond. Nom Nom.

  4. Jacque says:

    Love the healthy alternative!

  5. I must admit I eat this everyday for my breakfast sandwich on my favorite gluten-free, yeast-free bread. I also make my own almond butter when I get the almonds on sale at Sprouts!
